Georgia Genetti

Obituary:
From Redlands Facts:

GEORGIA LYNN GENETTI, 61

By REDLANDS DAILY FACTS | redlands@dfmdev.com |
January 12, 2009 at 12:00 a.m.
On Sunday, January 4, 2009, the sweet spirit of Georgia Genetti passed away to a land that is free from sorrow and pain.
She battled cancer for four years with a radiant smile, a positive attitude and was an inspiration to all who knew her. She was so at peace with her life and her God and was looking forward to her eternal life with her parents, Frank and Flora Genetti.
She was born in Columbus Ohio on March 11, 1947 into a military family and had traveled the world by the time she was a young teenager. This began her love of travel and she touched everyone she ever met, no matter what race or nationality with her infectious lust for life.
She was the belle of Redlands High School and went on to become a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority at San Diego State University where she graduated in 1969.
One of her greatest accomplish ments was her true friend ship, devotion, and loyalty to her many long time friends and family.
She is survived by her brother Frank, sister-in-law Judy, and her nephew Ryan, who was like a son to her and her soul mate.
We cannot be sad – we must be grateful that she touched our lives in a way only Georgia could by bringing a little slice of heaven into our daily lives. She will be forever missed but never forgotten.
Friends and family are invited to a memorial service to be held on Wednesday, Jan.14, at 2 p.m. at El Camino Memorial Chapel in Sorrento Valley. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Georgia’s name to St. Jude Hospital.
The family would like to thank Vitas Hospice and all of her caring friends for their wonderful and loving care in her final days.

George Gorton

Obituary:
From San Diego Tribune:

George Gorton, political strategist and world traveler, dies at 75

JOHN WILKENS
JUNE 1, 2022 3:50 PM PT

George Gorton’s storied career as a political adviser almost died in its infancy, buried in the rubble of the Watergate scandal.
He fled Washington, D.C., and worked odd jobs until he got resurrected as a strategist and helped guide San Diego Mayor Pete Wilson to statewide victories in races for U.S. senator and California governor in the 1980s and 1990s.
He also assisted Arnold Schwarzenegger’s move from actor to governor, and spent time in Russia working to re-elect President Boris Yeltsin in a come-from-behind campaign that generated a 1996 Watergate unfolded, the Washington Post detailed the alleged antics of a Gorton operative, who said he and others had been paid to monitor and undermine groups opposed to the president. In one case, the operative said, they were told to set up a drug bust among Quakers holding a marathon peace demonstration outside the White House.
Gorton said reports about the “kiddie spy corps” were false or blown out of proportion, but the administration cut him loose in 1973. In the best-known book about Watergate, “All the President’s Men,” Gorton’s involvement merited three pages.
His efforts to find another job backfired when it looked like the RNC was helping him. The then-chairman of the committee, George H.W. Bush, held a press conference to announce that Gorton was done in Republican politics.
“Friends of mine — I thought they were my friends — walked across the street when they saw me coming so they wouldn’t bump into me,” Gorton told the Union-Tribune in a 1995 interview.
He slunk back to San Diego and worked as an intern at a bank. He was a tour guide. He went around to radio stations, handing out toy bears and asking disc jockeys to play “Winnie the Pooh,” a single by the Mike Curb Congregation.
“It was awful,” he said.
In a roundabout way, Watergate is also what got him back on his political feet. Vice President Spiro Agnew was forced to resign, and Gerald Ford replaced him. When Nixon stepped down, too, Ford became president. Ford ran to keep the job in 1976, and his son, Jack, recruited a good friend to help with the campaign — Gorton.
That led to work on Bill Lowery’s campaign for Congress in 1980 and Wilson’s runs for U.S. senator and governor. He also helped Susan Golding (a one-time girlfriend) get elected San Diego mayor in 1992.
“I always thought of him as a strong strategist,” said Tom Shepard, a longtime San Diego political consultant. “He understood the forces shaping public attitudes and was adept at taking advantage of them.”
Wilson’s re-election as governor in 1994 is probably Gorton’s most famous campaign, at least in political-consulting circles. Polls showed Wilson trailing Democrat Kathleen Brown by 20 points until he made illegal immigration a central focus. (That was the same year Proposition 187 was on the ballot. It banned undocumented migrants from receiving many public services.)
Wilson won with 55 percent of the vote, prompting pundits to call it perhaps the first election that was both a landslide and an upset. The <a contenteditable=""false"" data-cke-saved-href="" href=""https://theaapc.org/"" style=""color:" rgb(5,="" 99,="" 193);"="" target=""_blank"" title=""https://theaapc.org/"">American Association of Political Consultants named it campaign of the year. In 2014, the group inducted Gorton into its Hall of Fame.
When he was wasn’t involved in politics, Gorton enjoyed traveling, sometimes picking the destination on a whim at the airport. He went to Thailand, India, Bali and the Yucatan Peninsula, among other places. He had a trailer in San Felipe for weekend getaways.
Many of the journeys were spiritual. He was an early trainee in EST. He studied Eastern philosophy and took meditation classes. He became friends with Don Miguel Ruiz, a teacher and author, and regularly attended the Burning Man festival.
Survivors include sons A.J. Gorton of Gilbert, Ariz., and Steven Moore of Ukraine; sister Ronnie Bohlander of Mesa; half-brother Kenneth Gorton of Tacoma, Wash.; step-sisters Christina Langaard and Birgitte Necessary, both of the Seattle area; and three nieces and one nephew.

JAN VICKERS (HAWES)

Graduation year: 1965
Deceased Date: 2023-12-02
Obituary:
Jan Elizabeth (Hawes) Vickers passed away in her sleep on Saturday, Dec. 2, 2023 at her home in Pauma Valley.

Her death came as a result of cardiovascular disease.

Jan was born in Redlands on April 10, 1947 the first child of John E. and Mattie M. Hawes.

She attended McKinley Elementary, Cope Junior High, then Redlands High School, graduating with the class of 1965.

Following high school, Jan went on to U.C. Santa Barbara, earning her B.A. and graduating in 1969.

After college Jan settled in Anaheim and started her career in the insurance business.

In 1970 Jan met Michael R. Vickers. They were married in 1971 but divorced a few years later.

Jan never remarried.

When Jan was 9 years old, she attended her first Dodger baseball game and was a fan for life.

Instead of the heartthrobs of the 50s and 60s, posters of Jan’s favorite players adorned her bedroom walls.

Jan enjoyed video poker and reading, and was never without a book, or her Kindle.

In the early 1980’s, Jan met her longtime best friend and companion Daren House. Although Jan maintained her home in Anaheim, most of her free time was spent at Daren’s Pauma Valley ranch, where she learned everything there was to know about the avocado.

Jan continued working in the insurance business and for over 30 years worked for the MF Salta Company until her retirement in 2012.

In 2020, Jan moved to Pauma Valley.

Jan was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her sister Jill McKnight (Gary) of Farmington, N.M., best friend Daren House of Pauma Valley, and many close personal friends.

No formal services are planned. Cremation has taken place and her ashes will remain in Pauma Valley at the ranch she loved so much.

Hank (Henry) Sherrod

Birth Date: 1947-04-03
Deceased Date: 2010-01-13
Obituary:
R. Henry Sherrod, a 17-year resident of Pasadena, passed away January 13, 2010 at his home after a six-month battle with lung cancer.

He was active in improving Pasadena neighborhoods. As chairman of the Pasadena Neighborhood Coalition, an organization dedicated to improving the quality of life in its neighborhoods, he presided over meetings of representatives from the city's neighborhood associations. Henry was also active in his own association in Brigden Ranch, serving as a director, treasurer and legal counsel. He was instrumental in working with the City to help stop the development of an unwanted building on Allen Avenue and replacing it with a more realistic and appealing mixed-use structure planned to provide housing for people with moderate incomes.

Henry was born in Palo Alto in 1947, and moved to Redlands, California two years later After graduation from Redlands High School, he completed his bachelor's degree in economics at Claremont McKenna College (then Claremont Men's College). He received his master's degree in business administration from Mount St. Mary's College in Moraga, California, and his law degree from the University of San Francisco.

Henry served in the Vietnam conflict as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army before beginning a successful career as an accomplished attorney and trial litigator in Northern and later Southern California.

He and his domestic partner, John Marquette, met in Oakland in 1983, and moved to Southern California in 1986. He worked for the Auto Club of Southern California for 13 years, retiring in 2005. Not one to sit still, Henry then worked for private legal firms as a trial attorney. Shortly after retirement, he was selected to be a member of the Los Angeles County Superior Court's Temporary Judge Program, and was a participant until rnid-2009.

Henry and John moved from Highland Park in Los Angeles to the Brigden Ranch neighborhood on Halloween Day, 1992. He and John installed one of Pasadena's first residential solar energy systems in 2005. After a period of illness beginning in January 2009, he was given his cancer diagnosis in July. He remained active during his illness, and was seen walking or running their dog through the neighborhood until late in the year.

Henry is survived by his domestic partner John Marquette, his sister Ann Sherrod Russell of Los Angeles, two brothers, David of Portland, Oregon, and Charles of Arizona, and two nephews, Kenneth Sackett of San Diego and Kelly Sackett of East Lansing, Michigan.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Museum of Redlands.
