JAN VICKERS
2023-12-02
Jan Elizabeth (Hawes) Vickers passed away in her sleep on Saturday, Dec. 2, 2023 at her home in Pauma Valley.
Her death came as a result of cardiovascular disease.
Jan was born in Redlands on April 10, 1947 the first child of John E. and Mattie M. Hawes.
She attended McKinley Elementary, Cope Junior High, then Redlands High School, graduating with the class of 1965.
Following high school, Jan went on to U.C. Santa Barbara, earning her B.A. and graduating in 1969.
After college Jan settled in Anaheim and started her career in the insurance business.
In 1970 Jan met Michael R. Vickers. They were married in 1971 but divorced a few years later.
Jan never remarried.
When Jan was 9 years old, she attended her first Dodger baseball game and was a fan for life.
Instead of the heartthrobs of the 50s and 60s, posters of Jan’s favorite players adorned her bedroom walls.
Jan enjoyed video poker and reading, and was never without a book, or her Kindle.
In the early 1980’s, Jan met her longtime best friend and companion Daren House. Although Jan maintained her home in Anaheim, most of her free time was spent at Daren’s Pauma Valley ranch, where she learned everything there was to know about the avocado.
Jan continued working in the insurance business and for over 30 years worked for the MF Salta Company until her retirement in 2012.
In 2020, Jan moved to Pauma Valley.
Jan was preceded in death by her parents.
She is survived by her sister Jill McKnight (Gary) of Farmington, N.M., best friend Daren House of Pauma Valley, and many close personal friends.
No formal services are planned. Cremation has taken place and her ashes will remain in Pauma Valley at the ranch she loved so much.
