Bud Perry Obituary
LTC Bud A. Perry United States Army (RET) LTC Bud A. Perry, US Army (retired), passed away on August 2nd, 2018, after battling a sudden and rare form of ALS. He was 70 years young. The third of eight children, Bud was born on August 26th, 1947 in Salt Lake City, Utah. His family lived in Long Beach and Petaluma, California, as well as Billerica, Massachusetts, before settling in Redlands, California in 1960. He attended Cope Middle School and his alma mater was Redlands High School. Bud then went on to UC Santa Barbara to major in electrical engineering in 1969, and became the first in his family to earn the honor of a universitydegree. He also earned an MA degree in International Relations from Boston University. Bud was proud to be the youngest electrical and mechanical maintenance foreman at Kaiser Steel Mill in Fontana upon graduation. In 1972, he voluntarily enlisted in the US Army. He was subsequently accepted and graduated from Officer's Candidate School. Bud chose Air Defense Artillery as his primary branch. After Airborne School, he was sent to Italy during the height of the Cold War. Stationed in the Po River Valley not too far from Vicenza, Bud fell in love with the Italian culture and language. Bud was particularly proud of being a paratrooper and Jump Master in the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He further serviced his country as a Foreign Area Officer confronting a restive Soviet Union. Bud honed his language skills at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California. His subsequent service took him around the world to include duty stations in: Darmstadt, Germany; Osan, South Korea; and Vicenza, Italy. His travels and language abilities distilled a potent wanderlust that shaped him for the rest of his life. During his 1981 Italian tour, Bud met Nancy Goforth, an Army Nurse, and they were wed in the heart of Vicenza's historic district. This union blossomed into a family of five. After 21 years of selfless service, Bud settled the family in his beloved hometown of Redlands. He then pursued a challenging second career as an educator in the Rialto School District; teaching elementary, middle and finally high school mathematics. Bud's passions included exploring diverse cultures, cuisines, and language studies which enriched his travels throughout the world. A voracious reader and student; he learned to speak five languages! Some of Bud's adventures included skiing in the Alps, white water rafting on the Snake River, kayaking the Everglades and road tripping and exploring the United States National Parks. At home, or while visiting friends, Bud loved sharing tales of his journeys while cooking elaborate gourmet meals always served with a side of history and a quirky, robust sense of humor. Bud was unfiltered yet kind, intelligent, and generous. He was a man of faith and was an involved member of Redland's First Lutheran Church for decades. Bud was also an enthusiastic member of the Redlands chapter of the Knights of the Round Table and the Military Officers Association of America. He was a spirit larger than life simply put, he was the real deal! He was predeceased by his father Lt Col Jack Russell Perry and mother Doris Bohlene Schober Perry. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Nancy Ann Goforth Perry, daughter Kerry Deatherage, sons Maximilian Perry and Joseph Perry, son-in-law Jerry Deatherage and grandson Justin Deatherage.
