Richard Oliver Daves of Veterans Colony Wilburton, OK died Saturday, June 27, 2015 at the Veterans Colony Community, OK at the age of 69. Richard was born June 21, 1946 in Long Beach, CA to Ben and LaVerne (Walters) Daves. He grew up in California, graduating from Redlands High School in Redlands, CA, in 1965. He enlisted in the U.S. Army at that time, earning various honors during his 15 years of service, including the National Defense Service Medal, VietNam Service Medal with 1 Silver Star, VietNam Campaign Medal, Army Commendation Medal with 20LC, 4 Good Conduct Medals, the VietNam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, and Meritorious Unit Citation. He is survived by his daughters, Martha Steeno of Oregon and Teresa Steeno of Kansas; significant other, Sheryl Flesher of Manhattan, KS; and sister, Mardee "Martha" Kappeler of California. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and LaVerne Daves and brother Nelson Daves of Ft. Walton Beach, Florida.A Memorial Service will be held 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 6, 2015 at the Veterans Colony Cemetery Pavilion, Veterans Colony Community, Wilburton, Oklahoma.Honorary Pallbearers will be Bill Hulsey, Chuck White, Edward Daves, Chuck Baslock and Tina Baslock.Arrangements entrusted to Jones Harkins Funeral Home, Wilburton, OK.
