Roger von der Hellen A 1965 graduate from Redlands High School passed away on Saturday, July 10, 2010 from congestive heart failure after a three year battle with lung cancer. Born in Fullerton, CA on May 10, 1947, Roger and his family moved to Redlands in 1959 where his passion for the automobile was born and a career in the automotive industry was evident. In 1986 Roger became the West Coast Technical Training Instructor for Volvo Cars of North America. Roger led Volvo North America's training department to win the Service of Excellence Award 3 years in a row. His talent for working on Volvos was surpassed only by his willingness to share his knowledge with many vintage Volvo owners. Roger's beautifully restored 1964 Volvo 122 Sedan was featured in the August 2007 issue of Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car. It has placed 1st in many shows throughout California. Roger leaves his wife of 22 years, Cheryl of Huntington Beach, CA, his children Erik von der Hellen of Columbia, SC and Rebekah von der Hellen of San Mateo, CA, three sisters; Vicki Montez of Lake Arrowhead, Heidi von der Hellen of Twin Peaks and Rachel Claflin of Boston, MA. Three grandchildren; Erika, Derek and Noah and twin great- grandaughters, Emma and Molly and a nephew Corey Montez of Folsom, CA, a niece Danya Montez of Lake Arrowhead. Roger is also survived by many loving friends and other extended family members. A Celebration of Roger's life will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, July 31, 2010 at Huntington Central Park, Huntington Beach, CA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to The City of Hope.
